Journal #2
- Chapters 4-7
- Perspective: Dill
I've finally come back to Maycomb, and I get to see Jem and Scout again. I told them I got to ride a train all by myself from Meridian to Maycomb Junction. We immediately began deciding what to play, but Scout didn't want to play the usual game. She irked me a bit, but then I said I could smell death. I played with Scout a bit by saying she was going to die in 3 days, but then Jem started talking about Hot Steams. I didn't know who to believe, but Scout wanted to ride in the big tire. I thought that would be fun, but then he pushes her with a hint of malignant that she went spinning into the Radley's yard.
Jem and I ran after to with Jem hollering at her to get out. I watched as they started bickering with each other until Jem ran to get the tire. Before they could argue again Calpurnia called us for lemonade. After Jem had his second glass he announced that he had a great idea for a new game; he told us it was about Boo Radley. We were going about who would be who and Scout protested, she's been acting like such a girl. Finally when we got situated Scout was Mrs. Radley, I was Mr. Radley, and Jem was Boo Radley. As the summer progressed, so did our game. Jem showed that Boo was a tyranny and with that, we continued and added more characters and words too.
It was just a small little drama that was made up with all the gossip from around town but it was enjoyable none the less. When Mr. Nathan Radley passed on his daily trip, we would stand still and silent till he was out of sight. One day Atticus came and asked us what we were playing. Jem evaded the question as best he could; we were close to being caught. Scout tormented Jem enough so that we didn't play much anymore. After a while it was unanimous that the drama was over. Jem and I started making plans to do other things, and we excluded Scout a lot. She mainly was hanging around Miss Maudie's, and we called for her only when we needed a third person. We didn't mind though, she was acting like such a girl latley, and we had new plans to go into action.
